The Uses of Barcodes during the Manufacturing Process
By Neil Jones
Barcodes, which contain complete information about products, are important in businesses. From the production process to the shipping of goods, it has an essential role throughout the manufacturing process. Its advantages in the supply chain, materials management, and production control triggered regulatory bodies to ask for compliance in labeling involving RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags and barcodes. Research has produced 2D barcodes, which can store more information in smaller places, and replaced the linear ones. This ability of the new barcode is useful in space scarce applications, such as healthcare name tags and small-sized electronics identification labels. It also enables traceability of components in security-sensitive industries like aerospace and defense industries. The following shows the role of barcodes throughout the manufacturing process: • Raw materials usually arrive in the manufacturing unit with barcodes; otherwise, production centers generate their own barcode which will then be attached to the packages. After the barcode identification is complete, the materials will move on to the inventory. • At the inventory, the materials will be linked to the barcode labels of the shelves where they are placed; these labels can be scanned 30ft. away even from a forklift. This enables the operator to store complete information about the raw materials and its storage location. • During the production process, the raw materials will be taken out of the inventory shelves, and barcodes will be scanned to update necessary information automatically. Damaged barcode labels are also replaced in this stage. • After updating records, the materials will be brought to the factory floor for the assembly stage. First, the parts and its quantities will be verified using the barcode labels, which are used to track the materials throughout the process. This is important especially if a component is damaged and has to be put aside. During the assembly stage a new barcode will be generated which will be the new product’s label. • Using thermal transfer printing technology, and printers which comply with the UL/CSA regulatory content, the new product identification will be printed on the new material. Usually, synthetic labels are used since they are durable and last longer. • After individual products have been labeled with a barcode, it will be packaged into batches. These batches will have new barcodes, which will ensure tracking during the shipping process until they reach shops and final consumers. Barcodes may be damaged during this stage due to exposure to harsh elements such as water, dirt, and scratches; Specific scanners are available for this case. At every stage, barcode labels must be in compliance with the regulations for package labeling.
