Industries benefiting From RFID Technology
By Neil Jones
RFID is taking many industries by storm. If you are not aware of what RFID is, it stands for Radio Frequency Identification because it uses components within a system that utilize radio waves to communicate data. It is reliable, can broadcast data over a large distance, and allows for as much or as little information as you need to be communicated in real time. Here are some of the industries that are benefiting from RFID right now: • Healthcare – Hospitals and other healthcare facilities have a lot to track. They track everything from people to equipment. It is important to ensure the right information is with the right person. This is needed for surgery reasons and to keep track of patients when they are being moved around the facility. Equipment must also be tracked for a number of reasons. The first reason is to know what the facility has and what it doesn’t have. Information contained within RFID can also help track maintenance schedules and replacement schedules so that equipment remains in good working order. A healthcare facility may also want to track other assets and their condition. That way the facility has an accurate account of what they have and don’t have. • Warehouses – Warehouses use RFID to send and receive items. RFID helps to track packages as they arrive and leave. They are also important in working with shipping systems to create bills of lading that recipients must use to ensure that all items have been received. • Stores – Grocery stores, supermarkets, and department stores can use RFID to track their merchandise. They can get an account of what is on the floor, what is in the warehouse area, and what may be stored in other areas. This is a great way to see if something is in stock without having to go physically search for it. The RFID tags are able to hold enough information to make certain determinations about merchandise. RFID is also used to keep track of such things as keys that belong to the business or other items such as walkie talkies that are provided to management. • Fleet management – There are companies such as trucking companies, delivery companies, and moving companies that must manage fleets. RFID helps to keep track of each vehicle in the fleet. Information for each vehicle can be altered so that mileage, maintenance schedules, and replacement schedules can be followed. The oil change date of a truck can be determined just by checking out information in the tag. • Asset management – An office building may want to take advantage of asset management. For instance, they may loan out laptops to employees and they want to keep track of who has what and when it is returned. Using RFID for this and other office supplies helps significantly. Being able to track each asset item within the business is important. If something can’t be found, that can be considered a loss. RFID can also be used to track down the last location for that item. Even the small business may benefit from RFID. There really isn’t any business that is too big or too small to enjoy being able to track down what is theirs. Mistakes can be avoided, productivity can be increased, and employees can be more efficient. Furthermore, RFID can be integrated with legacy systems, making transition much easier. The increase in productivity is also quite noticeable when systems can be integrated in this way. Some companies do not realize that integration is something that is simple because of the significant difference that it can make. Something that makes a significant difference is something that many wouldn’t think would be easy.

Thank you for sharing this information on RFID, Neil. Electronics have made our lives better in many ways, that the average person, doesn't realize. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
It is amazing how technology has changed our lives.
I wonder how much these thingamajiggies cost. I'm guessing the chips or tags themselves are quite cheap but the equipment to read them isn't.
